Press Release

Mont Vernon, NH — October 7, 1999

Circle Noetic Services Teams up with Kanda Software to develop Internet versions of Houghton Mifflin’s most popular reference works.

Circle Noetic Services, a leading developer of natural language processing software, and Kanda Software, an advanced developer and integrator of Internet and Intranet applications, announced the creation of new Internet and Intranet products based on Houghton Mifflin’s (NYSE: HTN) most popular reference works for the American Heritage® Dictionary, and Wall Street Words. Kanda utilized Circle Noetic’s PassWord™ spell checking technologies that suggest spelling corrections based on visual or phonetic derivations of the misspelled word to enhance the usability of these reference works.

These applications will allow Houghton Mifflin customers to build custom Intranet reference libraries with access to the American Heritage® Dictionary, and Wall Street Words. “Our vision is to augment the dictionary with other seamlessly integrated reference materials for vertical markets and intelligent information access,” commented David Jost, Vice President of Electronic Reference Products, Trade and Reference Division, at Houghton Mifflin.

Kanda will build separate Internet titles, as well as an integrated product. American Heritage® Dictionary and Wall Street Words are currently available. They will all work on NT and Unix workstations under IIS, NS, and Apache Web servers.

Under the agreement with Houghton Mifflin, both Kanda Software and Circle Noetic retain the rights to license American Heritage dictionary word list in conjunction with PassWord spell checker.

“This is an excellent opportunity for Kanda and Circle Noetic,” said Alex Karpovsky, President of Kanda Software. “We believe there will be a significant need for trusted and respected add-ins such as these.”
