Microsoft Selects Circle Noetic Services for Next Version of Microsoft Reader.
Circle Noetic Services, Inc., a leading developer of natural language processing software,
announced today that it was selected by Microsoft to provide the hyphenation and stemming engines
used in Microsoft Reader, the first electronic reading software with ClearType display technology.
Circle Noetics was selected because of the small size and high accuracy of its Dashes hyphenation
and WordFan stemming tools. Both will be used in Microsoft Reader versions 1.51 and beyond.
Microsoft licensed the engines because they are algorithmic, not dictionary-based, and therefore
quite small, said Ilan Sender, layout project manager of the LIT team at Microsoft eBooks.
In addition, the Dashes hyphenation engine, specifically, is much more accurate that the other
algorithm-based alternatives we considered.
Dashes is based on a powerful hyphenation algorithm that is fast and well over 99.9% accurate
against word lists of 92,000 to 2 million words across 32 languages. According to these lists,
Dashes identifies nearly all syllables, and inserts correct hyphens in close to all cases. WordFan is
a highly customizable natural language processing toolbox that provides linguistic intelligence
in many languages. Currently, Microsoft has licensed the engines for English, French, Spanish,
Italian and German.
In addition to the quality of the Dashes product, Microsoft selected Circle Noetics for their responsiveness
and ability to adapt to Microsofts changing needs.
Circle Noetic Services was able to provide QFEs (Quick Fix Engineering) during the last days
of our release to improve the quality of the product, said Sender.
Working with Microsoft on eBook Reader was very exciting, said Sasha Nizhnikov,
president of Circle Noetics. An electronic document is the next publishing frontier, which now
as a result of the explosive growth of the Internet represents a unique opportunity for publishers as well
as for technology providers. Already our technology is being used in Houghton Mifflin's electronic American
Heritage Dictionary and Davis Advertising online ad proofing system among others. Including Microsoft
in the list of our ePublishing customers significantly increases our footprint in this emerging
